What is Awaken Journal? A private, encrypted journal app, and what it refuses to do
Awaken Journal is a private, end-to-end encrypted journal app made by Everything Awaken. It puts your journal, your to-do list, your spending and your notes on one page for each day, and it encrypts what you write on your own device, so the people who run it cannot read it. It has no ads, no social feed, and no AI reading your entries. It is available on Android through Google Play, it also works in your browser, and the iPhone app is coming.
That's the short answer. The rest of this post is the longer one: what the app actually is, who it's built for, and the list of things we decided never to build, which says as much about it as the features do.
What it is, in one sentence
A day journal with the rest of your day built around it.
Most tools split a day into pieces. Your thoughts go in one app, your tasks in another, your spending in a spreadsheet, your half-formed ideas in a notes app, and once a week you try to piece them back together. Awaken Journal starts from the opposite idea: your day is one thing, not five. So it lives on one page.

The same five jobs, two shapes. On the left, five separate apps. On the right, one page for the day, sealed with one lock.
The five parts of a day
- Journal. The foundation, and the one part that's always on. Gratitude, thoughts, lessons, what happened.
- To-Do. Your tasks for the day, including a few "Frog" tasks: the ones that would make the day worth it if nothing else got done.
- Finance. A record of what you spent and earned, which you write by hand. More on why below.
- Notes. A separate space for longer writing that doesn't belong to one particular day.
- Weekly Review. Not a separate app. It's a rhythm built into To-Do: a moment to look back at the week you just closed.
To-Do and Finance can each be switched off in Settings. Switching one off hides it but never deletes what's underneath, so switching it back on brings everything back.

What "private" means here
A lot of apps say "private." Here it means something specific: your entries are encrypted on your device before they are sent anywhere, with a key that comes from your password and never leaves your device.
This is also why the app shows a warning at sign-up that you can't skip: if you forget your password, we cannot recover your writing. A company that could recover it would be holding a way in. Chapter 2 goes through all of it, including the few things our server does see (like your email and which dates have entries) and the things it never sees (the words).
Who it's for
Awaken Journal is for someone who:
- wants one place for a day instead of five apps for five parts of it,
- wants to write honestly, and knows they'll only do that if nobody else can read it,
- would rather have fewer features than a specialist app than an app that reads everything they write.
That last point is a real trade, so here it is plainly. If you want a full budgeting tool that connects to your bank, a note vault built for linking thousands of ideas, or an AI that reads your journal and replies to it, there are apps built for exactly that, and they'll do it better than we will. We deliberately didn't build toward any of it.
What it refuses to do
This is the part most app pages leave out. These aren't features we haven't got round to. They're decisions.
- No ads. Ever. There's nothing to sell your attention to, so there's no reason to keep you scrolling.
- No social feed. Nobody else ever sees your entries, your tasks or your spending. There are no followers, likes or shares.
- No AI reading your writing. Nothing summarises, analyses or "responds to" your journal. Your entries reach our server already encrypted, so this isn't a promise we could quietly change later. We'd have to remove the encryption first.
- No bank connection. Finance is a record you keep by hand. That means no bank passwords, no third party holding your statements, and a number you actually looked at when you wrote it down.
- No public score or leaderboard. Your numbers are never shown to anyone else. Chapter 6 covers exactly how scores work.

Quick answers
Who makes Awaken Journal?
Everything Awaken, founded by Reet. Awaken Journal is its first product.
Can the people behind Awaken Journal read my entries?
No. Entries are encrypted on your device with a key we never receive. Chapter 2 explains exactly how.
Does Awaken Journal use AI on my journal?
No. Nothing in the app reads, summarises or analyses what you write.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. Finance is entered by hand, on purpose.
Is there an Awaken Journal app for Android or iPhone?
Yes. On Android, download it from Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.everythingawaken.journal. It also runs in your browser at journal.everythingawaken.com. The iPhone app is coming, and we do not have a date yet.
Where to go next
If this sounds like your kind of tool, the next post is the practical one: the five modules in more detail, and why we chose one day page over an all-in-one workspace, a note vault or a single-purpose journaling app.
